![]() What people consider Peace Arch Park is actually two parks, an American one and a Canadian one. When it comes to Sumas and Blaine, both in Washington state, there are pieces of the towns north of what many assume is the border. The border was agreed upon as the 49th parallel for western Canada, but when it came time to survey and mark it with monuments, there were a few human errors, and some of the monuments are north of the 49 parallel, and some are south. So while we all think of the border as running along the 49th parallel (the latitude as determined through mathematical coordinates), that's not quite accurate. 1. Like how when one takes the ferry from Vancouver to southern Vancouver Island you cross into, and out of, a weird wedge of the U.S. out in the ocean. At a minimum, there are some unexpected quirks. No masks and no one was maintaining any sort of distance. There were also a few tents set up where people were presumably having "conjugal" visits. I ran into an RCMP officer chatting over the border with a US police officer and asked where I cross and they both said anywhere at zero avenue that the park touches.Īgain I saw tons of families reuniting - I even saw a wedding. I actually parked a few blocks above 0 avenue and walked down. The fact that this is allowed is confirmed by multiple online news articles - lots of families are doing this to reunite. You are technically in the US when doing this. The Canadian side of the park is closed, but you are legally allowed to step over zero avenue into the US side of the park and enter the park that way. I am sure that stretch is being monitored but it may be an option. Still, there must be a spot where one can safely pull over (and pop the hood up if they need to pretend) and have a conversation at a normal volume. Boundary Road is not very busy, but there is quite a bit of traffic on the Canadian side. Boundary Road in WA run parallel with a 20-ft 10-ft grass median in between.
